Soul Cysters

I have struggled with my weight my entire life.

Literally. I've NEVER been the "skinny" girl. EVER.

This post is going to dig deep into personal struggles I've had and what I've been able to do about them.

Three years ago when I was pregnant with my son I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Don't know what PCOS is? Click here. I cried. Then I laughed and thought, there's no way! A nurse actually said to me, "you guys must have tried for forever to get pregnant since you have PCOS!" and I looked at my husband and looked at her and said, "No, it didn't take long at all actually". Cue the awkward silence.

I left that appointment feeling so many different emotions. The biggest one was that I didn't feel as though I had been adequately diagnosed. I felt like I didn't suffer from the "typical" PCOS symptoms so I felt as though I didn't really have this. It was just something that had been thrown my way to try and put a reason on my weight.

Fast forward a few years, I find myself pregnant again and once again, not an issue for us! Our daughter is a blessing but not planned whatsoever, which gave me even more reason to believe the PCOS diagnosis wasn't for me.

Once I was done nursing my daughter I started my health and fitness journey. I started running, eating clean, drinking Shakeology, working out, etc. I did see some drastic changes. I noticed Shakeology was helping my acne, energy level, etc which was uh-may-zing! But the weight was coming off really slow or not at all.. no matter what. So, I started to think about this whole PCOS thing again. And wouldn't you know it.. that's exactly what was holding me back.

I decided to take a few days and sulk, because it's really hard to do all the right things and not get any results. Then I decided to take the bull by the horns and get to work. I made an appointment with my PCP (doctor) and had some bloodwork done. This came back showing what I already knew - PCOS and borderline insulin resistant (which is usually a trait of PCOS). So, I got a game plan together and figured out how I was going to tackle this.

I already knew Shakeology was doing amazing things for my PCOS symptoms so that was a definite YES for keeping in my new routine. I switched from just clean eating to clean eating low carbs. Now this doesn't mean "fake diet foods" or "low fat", blah blah blah. This means REAL foods and the carb stuff in very small moderation. I also started on a medication to help my body process insulin from the foods better. Basically to help my pancreas work effectively.

BOOM baby. I am not one to let something (aka anything) hold me back from my dreams, goals and aspirations. I have work to do so everything else better get out of the way!!

The amazing thing is as soon as I made these changes I started seeing results... WHAT?! Yeah. Amazing. My goal is to hit 60 more pounds lost by October. I'm going to hit that goal come hell or high water!

I'm posting this not to get sympathy or to over share my personal issues.. I'm posting this because you would be SO surprised the amount of women who struggle with PCOS. Many people are told theres not much they can do and they need to just be ok with the hand they've been dealt. BOO! I believe we were created for more. Some of just have more difficult journeys than others, but we're all created to be more and be better.

So if you're a cyster (as the PCOS community likes to say) I welcome you with open arms and say THERE IS HOPE! You CAN beat your symptoms and find a better path. Everyones struggles and lives are different with this diagnosis. No two people are the same. But I can say with certainty that I've found a system that works and can help you too.
